Warren Wilson College, Smoky Mountains Disc Golf

Parked at the 479E Trail head. Hiked 479E to 145 to 665 trails. 479, moderate climb but worth the work for the spectacular view of Bent creek and Blue Ridge mountains in the distance. I've also road this sequence of trails on my mountain bike. 665 is wooded and technical. Fast downhills, mixed with water, obstacles and small "ramps/jumps".

The trail around the lake is great for technical mtn. biking and easy hiking. It's primarily flat with no climbs. 333 trail has a spectacular canopy of Rhododendron when the season is right.

Bent creek is a great day trip site for people who live in Asheville. Bent creek also has camping for those out of towners. More

Beautiful place. Too bad it rained the whole time. I did see a buffalo though.

Good trip...go later in the year for better hiking.

Our original plan was to make a huge loop around Alice and Thomas lakes and go back out through Polly again. We began to have second thoughts about the distance when we realized we were going to have to paddle our butts off and not have much time to goof around. Morale hit an all time low when Ryan and Brent dumped their canoe trying to wade through some rapids, soaking everything they had, and even losing a few things. We decided to call it a day and hang stuff up to dry at what we soon realized was one of the best campsites in all the BWCA. We decided not to bother with the rest of the loop. We just enjoyed ourselves immensely instead. More

This was a fun trip. We had lots of options for our route and basically made it up as we went along.

We had the place to ourselves in the north end of the loop and saw lots of wildlife. We actually came up pretty unexpectedly on a moose in one of the streams connecting those narrow lakes.

We saw more traffic when we hit the southern part of the loop, but it still wa sn't bad. We found a nice cliff in Gillis Lake that we liked jumping off so much we came through Gillis again on a later trip. More

Our entry point was Poplar Lake. We had to compete with a lot of wind during this trip, but used our rain fly as a sail to fly across Winchell Lake. When we made it to Gaskin Lake, however, the wind was just too strong to paddle around looking for a campsite, so we gave up quickly and camped at Horseshoe Lake for a second time at the end of our loop.

We had a lot of haze while at Winchell Lake. We speculated that there could have been some distant fires, because it seemed to low and dark for just overcast skies. That's just a guess, though.

We had good luck fishing some of the smaller lakes south of Winchell. There are a few that are just a short portage away. More

We couldn't manage to find a 4th member for the trip and scheduling proved incredibly difficult. We ended up taking a shorter than usual 3 person trip with 1 canoe and 1 kayak. We decided this would be the year to try a base camp trip since hauling and portaging would be so much less efficient than usual.

We camped on Seagull lake for the entire trip, exploring it and the smaller lakes around it. It was a good trip, but I think we would all prefer to keep moving and see new things.

The most fun part was swimming around and shooting the "rapids" in the creek that connected Seagull to Alpine Lake. We had great fishing in this spot on a previous trip, but had no luck there this year. More

PARK: Round Lake
ENTRY: # 52 - Brant Lake

We put in at Round Lake with Brant Lake being our actual permitted entry point. We somehow went to the wrong portage despite the fact that we had already done the portage between Round and Brant twice on a previous trip, and ended up starting our loop backwards and maybe technically illegally. We made it all the way to Missing Link Lake before realizing the error, and decided to forge ahead since we already had a late start.

There was fairly heated debate about whether to leisurely fish our way through a fairly connected but roundabout path to Tuscarora Lake or to do the 400 something rod portage between Missing Link and Tuscarora. We did the portage and found a campsite right away.

We attempted to paddle our way through to Jerry Lake by way of a southern finger on Tuscarora, but the route was impassable. We ended up portaging to Crooked Lake through Owl Lake. Crooked lake was very congested and we ended up camping on Jerry Lake after wasting much time looking for routes and campsites.

We made our way to Gillis Lake where we relaxed, did some cliff diving, and some members did rock climbing. Gillis has an excellent island cliff for jumping.

We planned to stay another night, but other commitments combined with a nasty thunderstorm pushed us to paddle all the way out from Gillis. The best fishing of the trip was had in the first few minutes following the storm once we were already back to Round Lake. More

As a deckhand on the Tallship Bounty, we sailed from Puerto Rico to Europe and spent the summer cruising around England, Belgium, Ireland, and into the Baltic. After spending a month in the Baltic we spent another month exploring Norway, and then after a short stop in Falmouth, England we headed back across the Atlantic reaching Virgin Gorda on 11/19 and our final destination St. Thomas on 11/22.

I sailed as crew on Tallship Bounty for six months of their 2010 season. I got on board in Bath, Maine and ended the trip in Boothbay Harbor Maine, after spending the summer sailing through all five great lakes to Duluth Minnesota.

My first trip to Canada! I was 5, so it was lots of fun. We stayed in an RV near a resort and some lakes.

Lots of canoeing and portages, not so much fishing. We stayed on an island as to keep away from bears. Total isolation from the world. We only saw one group while we were there.
